TedxTeen: Still Figuring It Out by Tavi Gevinson

-Has this video taught you anything new about the subject of Feminism? Do you agree/disagree with Tavi Gevinson’s explanation? Why?

This video is used to introduce the topic of feminism. This is a TedTalk but from the point of view of a teen. The speaker is around the same age as my students, possibly younger, which makes the subject more relevant to them.

No Doubt - Just a Girl

-This song is great to play at the beginning of a class. Students can reflect on the lyrics on an entrance card or on their blogs. This is another way to connect the ideas of feminism to students through popular media.

Everyday Feminism
The Ladies Room
I'm a Male Feminist

-Each student reads an article and then summarizes and discusses their article with another student (who has read a different article). These three articles have different ways of thinking about feminism and discuss different important ideas to think about. Students are learning through reading and also teaching their peers about what they have learned.

Gender Box Activity

-This is a link to the gender box activity that I have used in the unit plan. There are helpful images that better show how the activity works and can be effective. This is a great way to promote collaboration within the classroom.

The Yellow Wallpaper Audio
The Yellow Wallpaper Text

-In assigned groups of 3-4 students they will discuss the story and compare notes. This will be the same group for their assignment. Hand out assignment outline and rubric, they can begin discussing and preparing for one of the multiple options for exploring The Yellow Wallpaper/Jane Eyre. However, remind them that they need to finish up to chapter 26 to fully be able to understand the project.

These are links to the audio and textual versions of The Yellow Wallpaper. Using the audio version would be a nice break from reading and an alternative method of comprehension for students. Listening is also an important form of literacy.

Alicia Keys - A Woman's Worth Video
Alicia Keys - A Women's Worth Lyrics

-Reflect on the lyrics of “A Woman’s Worth” how does it relate to Jane Eyre or The Yellow Wallpaper.

This is another song/lyric that could be used to begin class. It can be used as a form of reflection as an entrance card or in their blogs.

Jane Eyre (2011) - Directed by Cary Fukunaga

There are multiple film versions of Jane Eyre and you could choose any. I chose the 2011 version. It is the latest version with celebrities the students may enjoy more which will help them engage. Also, the way in which Fukunaga directed this version can be considered problematic to some viewers. There are some issues with the way Jane Eyre is portrayed that differs from her representation in the film (especially in terms of gender and female strength). These ideas are important for the students to come to realize and critique on their own. Showing and critiquing the film is a way to teach critical literacy.

Youtube is very prevalent in the lives of students. Using YouTube and online video publishing as an assignment promotes their interests and what students are comfortable with. Students also have the option of writing their reviews.
